Kayaking on University Lake

We’ve been getting a lot of rain lately, but Sunday after the skies were clear. I put my kayak in the back of the truck, loaded up the family and headed over to the University Lake to test out my new Ride 115 from Wilderness Systems. This was my maiden voyage and I decided to let everyone test it out. The kayak is extremely stable and I even stood up on it a couple times while out on the water. That should make it much easier to see over the marsh grass.

The big problem that we had was that everyone loved it and it was difficult to get them to wait their turn. We didn’t let the girls go by themselves since we really didn’t have a way to rescue them if they had a problem. I took the girls out one at a time and then the boys also took one of the girls out for a ride. Seems that Connie enjoyed herself as well.

Hopefully over the next few months, I’ll be able to explore a few of the more remote areas of the area waterways. I’ve got my fishing license and my fishing poles ready to go. I’ve been looking over the satellite images trying to identify places to look. A friend from church recently got into the sport (several months ago) and has a bunch of areas to fish.

I think you may need to get 5 more kayaks! We have been looking into getting some kayaks. We have been canoeing and have been to the Ocoee. We have the kayak fever but I am looking on Craigslist for some used ones. Have fun and be sure to get those girls some PFD’s!!!

The girls did have on their PFDs. I didn’t have mine on though as we were getting in and out of the kayak so much. Definitely necessary when in water with motorized water craft around.

I got the kayak for fishing (which increases the cost a good bit), but recreational kayaks are much more affordable. That’s something that I’m looking at for the boys. This is the time of year that the 2012 models are on clearance, so look around (including Craigslist). Are there many lakes in your area or is it mostly creeks and rivers?

Good thing I am up on my times tables! Yes, we have lots of streams, lakes, rivers and white water for the brave. I may work my way up to whitewater one day. Maybe. Have you seen those shorter kayaks, about 8 feet in length? I am thinking those would be so doable and transportable.

Keith and I went canoeing a couple of weeks ago at the base of Lookout Mountain and it was so beautiful. We saw some sandhill cranes and a deer ran across the creek right in front of us.
