Not wanting to have their future dependent on others, Google released their own browser a few days ago in the form of Google Chrome. A quicker path forward would have been to simply promote (and perhaps brand) the open source Firefox browser. Given Googles minimalist style (which I share), this didn’t really fit into their long-term goals. One side benefit of the new browser (other than controlling ones own destiny) is that anything that takes away power from Microsoft (and IE is part of that power), helps Google.
Above is a large chunk of the Chrome interface. Small, simple and pretty effective. I was pleasantly surprised that the install didn’t make a lot of intrusive changes to my OS setup. It imports your current settings and you can get started with it rather quickly. A quick change in the settings and I had the Home page button on the toolbar as well.
Biggest changes?
- Streamlined design
- Unified URL and Search input
- Visual History
If I had to grade it, I would give it a B+. The biggest decision to make is whether I should use it as my primary browser. Hmm…. the jury is still out on that. I’m not sure that I want to continue to provide Google with additional information about my internet usage.
