The main reason I stopped attending them is that the cost got too high for my employer. Not only did they lose my work for 2 or 3 days, but the conferences (and associated travel costs) got really high. I think I just need to try to attend one every year or so. Perhaps find a local user group. Hiring a new "kid" is outside my control. I've asked for that and have been turned down. In this economic environment, I happy to just have a job. I will agree that new hires will challenge your own assumptions about your work. I've learned a great deal when I was willing to listen. All this, and I diligently attend conferences and read professional periodicals. Maybe you should just hire a fresh new kid to come in and blow away all your old stodgy habits.
