I'm curious Elizabeth. If you had a pink DS, do you think the color would keep the boys from using it all of the time (if you let them.... which I'm not sure that you would). BTW, Maggie now wants one. Oh bother.

Happy Birthday, Emma!!! Such fantastic pictures - I almost feel like I am there with you guys. I would love a pink DS, so I am just a tad jealous.

It's been probably 6 or 7 years since the last time I attended a conference. The main reason I stopped attending them is that the cost got too high for my employer. Not only did they lose my work for 2 or 3 days, but the conferences (and associated travel costs) got really high. I think I just need to try to attend one every year or so. Perhaps find a local user group.

Hiring a new "kid" is outside my control. I've asked for that and have been turned down. In this economic environment, I happy to just have a job. I will agree that new hires will challenge your own assumptions about your work. I've learned a great deal when I was willing to listen.

Last month we hired a new employee to work with me. I'm already being challenged on some of my old, ingrained ideas - he's got a lot of energy and has never used some of the "antique" equipment that I'm comfortable with. And I know the newer stuff can deliver a lot of data I've never used, and could improve our knowledge of workplace conditions. All this, and I diligently attend conferences and read professional periodicals. Maybe you should just hire a fresh new kid to come in and blow away all your old stodgy habits.

Not sure why it is, but I love the fact that you can pick right back up where you left off with some friends (as you mentioned CAS). Perhaps it has to do with both parties realizing that time is short and good friendships are rare. Regardless, it's a wonderful thing.

I am always amazed about those friends that no matter the time between visits it is like you have never been apart when you get back together.

I know how you feel - we miss you, Connie and the kids very much. I have a friend from LA coming tomorrow and our visit will be short, but sweet. So many lovely people, what a blessing. I suppose we should really relish the times that we are together, and somehow slow the hands of time.
